It’s a story that is repeated over and over in our house, same plot, different details.
Tim has just left for work. I’m still in bed, barely conscious, aware that I should be trying to wake up but unable to summon the desire to do so. I hear the sound of feet on the stairs. Here comes Evan, the one who likes to snuggle. He’s brought a book with him. On goes the light.
“Hey!” I yelp. “Turn it off!”
“But it’s too dark in here to read,” he says. “I’ll just use Daddy’s flashlight.” Into the bed he goes with the book and the heavy black metal flashlight. The bed bounces as he makes himself comfortable. He situates himself up against me. By now, I am practically falling out of the bed. He quiets. I begin to doze.
Click, click, click. Click, click. Click. Turning Daddy’s flashlight on and off has proven to be far more exciting than the book. “Stop it,” I say firmly. “I’m trying to sleep.”
“Sorry, Mama.” I doze again. Soon I am aware of the constant movement of the bed and I no longer feel a warm body right next to me. Someone is burrowing. “Evan,” I say with frustration. “I can’t sleep when the bed is moving.”
“Okay,” he says, as he emerges from beneath the down comforter and joins me again at the pillows.
Now he is shaking something and I hear a soft “whoosh.” He has removed one of my pillows from its case.
“WHAT are you doing?” My irritation is readily apparent.
“I’m gonna get inside it,” he says.
“No, you’re not. You’ll rip it. Please just read your book.”
I hope that I can get a few more minutes of rest. Again, sleep begins to claim me.
Click, click, click. Click, click. Click.
I swing my feet to the floor with a sigh. “Good morning,” I say.

they’re fun aren’t they? Sadly, the years pass all too quickly…. I can relate to this, I’m not a morning person either~

They are fun! I mean, I’m certainly not laughing in the moment, but later, yes.
What time? It probably started about 7:15. That’s early for me!
